Zambian Emeralds:

Intense green emeralds come from the legendary Sandawana Mine of Zimbabwe, and they often have a subtle yellowish-green shade.  These emeralds are less porous as well as are less brittle compare to other types of emeralds.

Do you know Gemfields, the world's leading producer of ethically-sourced rare coloured gemstones produces 20% of all the emeralds in the world, and most of that coming from its mine in Zambia.

Also, Gemfields is the largest player in emerald mining and extracts 2 million to 3 million carats of the gems each month. Do you know that Zambian emeralds are found less expensive in the high-end ranges” according to a research.

Chief executive of Gemfields Harebottle said,” Color-stone mining all over the world is done on a very small scale, and referring to a model that has hampered Colombia from better exploiting the abundance of its natural resource. The CEO also said that Gemfields,  publicly traded on the London Stock Exchange's Alternative Investment Market is trying to change that model,  but one problem  that company faces is the lack of a uniform grading system" for emeralds like there is for diamonds stones (Clarity, brightness and color). However, the standards grading system for emeralds are still in flowing and not worldwide agreed upon, something that can affect both pricing and profitability. Also, Carat prices for small and high-quality emeralds have risen 1,000% in the past three years to around $40 for a gem that is in the rough and uncut.

Colombian Emeralds

On the other hand side, Colombian emeralds are rated as top quality emeralds and display a range of leafy bluish green emeralds. Colombia, which has the largest emerald deposits in the world, specially well-positioned to benefit from this increased demand. Many countries in Africa have large emerald deposits too. Presently, Colombia has 245,000 acres (99,000 hectares) with emerald-producing potential, of which only 22239ac (9,000 hectares) have been explored so far.

Colombia requires more and more foreign investors like GemfieldsPlc and exploration outside traditional areas to halt a decline in the production of emerald. Oscar Baquero, who heads the country’s federation said, We’ve always been digging in the same area and the veins become deeper when the surface deposits run out , as a result the operation becomes more expensive, so we have to have attract foreign investment”. Gemfields, the top emerald producer in the world has been visiting Colombia over the past few years, and looking to buy a share in an emerald mine. CEO of Gemfields, said “Gemfields tends to buy 75%, and leave 25% with local stakeholders as well as the starting purchase price for our share would have to be reasonable, letting us an opportunity to invest more into further growth.”

Beauty Of Emerald And Colombian Emeralds Makes Them Hard To Distinguish

Do you know that Zambia comes in second in terms of producing emeralds while Colombia tends to lead the world in production?  The prime reason for these two  countries standing out from the bunch in regard to production is quality. In addition, stones from either location or country tend to stand out because of their rich colors as well as their overall structural quality. Both Zambian and Colombia emeralds rank a 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness, and that puts them just behind sapphires and rubies at 9 and diamonds at 10.  It’s very common for   emeralds from either part to be treated by jewelers and  jewellery designers to add to their durability while enhancing the richness of  stone's colors as  emeralds are a little bit softer as well as are not wholly resistant to chipping and scratching.

What Sets Zambian And Columbian Emeralds Apart

Apart from their country of origin, emeralds from Colombia and Zambia do have some distinctions that set them apart from each other. Also, Colombia the leader in stone production tends to fetch a bit more in compared to Zambia when it comes to emerald prices. The reason for this, nevertheless, has nothing to do with beauty or quality, but everything to do with Colombia simply being the conventional source for emeralds

Which Emeralds To Choose

It's all your decision, but before choosing the right emeralds just check for some key comparisons between Columbian and Zambian emeralds:-

  • Colombian emeralds are relatively more expensive per carat than Zambian and beauty and its extremely rare color of the gems are the key reasons behind the high cost.  In Colombia, as the chromium content increases creating a deeper green hue the number of inclusions tends to increase than Zambian emeralds.

  • Presently studies suggest that Zambia ranks as the most important and the world's greatest source of emerald after Colombia.   Also, it has been seen that emeralds   from Zambia are bluer than the Colombian.

  • Now, Emeralds from Zambia are trending for some reasons, for example, the cutters and polishers of Colombian emeralds, the Zambian emerald workmen use the recognized way of oiling only using clear oils. However Zambian emeralds as a rule don't command the prices of very good quality Colombian emeralds, the most of the gems are high-quality.

Gemstones from Colombia and Zambia do have some appearance differences that distinguish them too. Zambia are popular for their bluish-green shade while stones from Colombian are noted for their deep “emerald” green color. Some gemologists report that Zambian emeralds maintain their color throughout while Colombian emeralds tend to have a clear core. Moreover, Zambian stones have a tendency to be a tad less brittle in comparison to those mined any other place, but when gemstones from Colombia and Zambia are compared, then thanks to strengthening methods the difference is primarily academic. If you want to design your own emerald ring or interested in another type of setting, then both Colombia emeralds and Zambia emeralds are ideal. Gemstones from these two specific locations are synonymous with quality and beauty.

  3. It's important to approach these beliefs with an open mind and remember that they are based on spiritual and metaphysical perspectives rather than scientific evidence. If you're interested in exploring the potential benefits of tanzanite stone or any other gemstone, you can do so while also keeping in mind the aesthetic enjoyment of the stone.
